Art Journal: Grow Wings

Yesterday, you saw my micro art journaling layout for a Facebook Color Challenge.

Today, here’s my full-sized page for the same challenge.

I began by using a palette knife to apply the three colors to my page. I didn’t have any particular style in mind, I just wanted to see what they looked like.

Then I used a couple of stencils to add more color to the page.

While that was drying, I started looking through a magazine that was in my office, because I was going to put it away, and I came across this image. It was absolutely perfect, repeating the rectangular pattern in the clothing, and picking up the color! I attached it to the page using matte medium.

The words read: “Grow wings”. When I am tearing up magazines to use for art journaling, I often come across interesting words on the left-over pieces. So I cut them out and save them in a shallow dish to use again later. Again, I attached the words using matte medium.

The butterflies were part of the image, but they were black and white. So I used a small, makeup applicator to dab them with Archival Ink to add transparent color to them. This helped to bring them out as a focal point.

I stamped the two, faint butterflies with the yellow paint, dabbing the paint onto the stamps with a sponge.

When all of this had dried over night, I outlined the images in white and then black Posca pen.

I have to say that this came out better than I thought it would. At first, after the image was added, there was too much texture and the image was mostly lost in the overall look. The addition of yellow ink and outlining brought the focus to the main topic and really made a huge difference!
